While Ron Jeffries of Jolly Pumpkin rightly receives regional and even national acclaim for his many fine Belgian-style sour ales, Matt Greff and his brewers at Arbor Brewing are quietly producing a worthy series of sour beers of their own. Today is the release of Flamboyant Wild Red Ale, a barrel-aged, bottle-conditioned Flemish style ale. Arbor describes it thus:
Our interpretation of this classic Belgian style was created by aging Jackhammer Old Ale for 6 months in gueuze inoculated oak casks and then bottle conditioning for a minimum of two months. The result is a unique ale with a bright mahogany hue, moderate carbonation, and a burst of complex fruity, spicy, sweet-tart, and earthy flavors with a quenching acidity in the finish.750 ml bottles are available at the Corner Brewery for $15, beginning today. I'll write more soon on the other sour beers coming from Arbor/Corner.
In other news, tickets went on sale today for the 6th Annual Michigan Brewers Guild Winter Beer Festival, taking place Feb. 26 in Grand Rapids. Tickets are $35 in advance and can be ordered online here or pick them up at your favorite local brewery. More information is available at the MBG web site.
