The Week in Beer: April Showers, May Flowers, and Spring Seasonals

Mother Nature has thrown me a curveball as far as cliches to use in introducing this Week in Beer. April showers? Despite recent weather, it wasn't particularly rainy this month. May flowers? They've been up since March.

Maybe instead of blathering about the weather, we should talk about beer. Spring is in full swing, and so are the delicious warm-weather seasonal brews as well as increasing options for enjoying God's own beverage outside amongst the splendor of His creation. Let's go!

Reserve Now for May 2 Bell's Beer Dinner at Terry B's

It's beer dinner time again at Terry B's Restaurant & Bar in Dexter.

Terry B's in Dexter is hosting its next beer dinner Wednesday, May 2, and as always the menu looks pretty fracking awesome. Tickets are $60 per person (I can't recall, but I don't think that includes tax and tip), and you can reserve by calling 734-426-3727.

Let me just say if you've never had a meal prepared by Chef Doug Hewitt, you are cheating yourself and should rectify that situation forthwith. For an example of what you can expect from this dinner, check out my recap of last summer's Arbor Brewing dinner.

Menu follows the jump.

The Week in Beer: Drinks, Shoots & Leaves

The hardcore photo that was TOO X-TREME for AnnArbor.com.

Note: Yeah, so I'm re-posting Thursday's AnnArbor.com column (with original photo!) way late, on account of post-vacation hangover, but there's still relevant info in it, so here you go.

As you read this, I should be slowly recovering from my vacation down in New Orleans, where I in fact did drink and do shots* before leaving. (Sorry, Lynne Truss.) Perhaps you followed my Big Easy odyssey on the Twitters.

Anyway, enough about New Orleans. I'm back in the Deuce, yo, and dishing up more of your local beer goings-on and whatnot, just like you've come to expect. Behold another glorious Week in Beer.

* Shots of oysters, that is.

Belgian-Style Tap Takeover at the Wurst Bar in Ypsilanti

So on Friday night I finally had a chance to go to the Wurst Bar in Ypsilanti, which opened earlier this year. Everyone I know had pretty much sung the praises of this place, and even if they hadn't, the concept of a bar serving good beer with a menu full of sausages would have eventually drawn me anyway.

The cool thing is, all the praises were deserved.  The space is large and comfortable, the jukebox is good, the staff all wear t-shirts with take-offs on famous album covers like Metallica's Kill 'Em All and The Misfits', well, anything with that skully thing on it. Yes, in a way the bar is a little self-consciously hipster-y, and I saw more than one "ironic" mustachioed dweeb come through the door, but there are more than enough things to make up for it.

The Week in Beer: Tiptoeing Through the Brew-lips

With apologies to T.S. Eliot, April is the coolest month, and I'm not talking about the recent dip in temperatures. I mean, of course, the return of our lush flora along with so many great spring and summer seasonal beers, not to mention the various and sundry activities associated with our favorite malt-and-hop beverage. Let us go then, you and I, to the Week in Beer.

The Week in Beer: Take Me Out to the Beer Park...

Photo: Flickr user Scott Tanis.

Don Henley, call your office. The Boys of Summer are back, and it’s time to enjoy some America’s Pastime with America’s Other Pastime. That’s right, I’m talking about baseball and beer. There’s plenty of both to be had in the days ahead, so let’s quit talking about it and get right into the details.
